The municipality of Esch-sur-Sûre (LU) renews the WaterWalls Festival for its second edition. It is the first cultural festival based on the principles of the circular economy. As an open-air exhibition of contemporary art, the festival aims to raise awareness about the artistic production and consumption aspects of culture. In 2023, 4 autonomous and participative art installations will be set up along the Sûre river, at the level of the 4 compensation dams, downstream of the large dam, in the idyllic valley of Esch-sur-Sûre.

These installations will form an ephemeral art trail from 10.06 to 10.09.2023.

Deadlines : Closing of the call for projects: 11 September 2022 at midnight. Announcement of the winners: 26 September 2022

Exhibition of the projects: during the entire duration of the WaterWalls Festival, i.e. from 10.06.2023 to 10.09.2023.

Endowment : The municipality of Esch-sur-Sûre will award a maximum of €40,000 per selected project for three projects. The fourth project, a "young creation" project, will be awarded €25,000.

Selection criteria :

Eligibility: This call for projects is open to all artists or artists' collectives from the following artistic fields: architecture, design, plastic art.

The project is aimed at professional artists (from Luxembourg or abroad) who have a good command of their art and previous experience of creation in public space and/or in the natural environment. The latter must demonstrate their ability to transcribe and raise awareness through their work of the challenges of sustainable development and the circular economy, while at the same time enhancing the natural heritage and the territory in which the festival is taking place. The proposed project must be original and not have been shown in any other venue, in any form whatsoever, before the end of the festival. Selection process: The projects are selected by a multidisciplinary jury whose composition will follow the following distribution: one member of the municipality of Esch-sur-Sûre, one representative of the Ministry of Culture, one national curator, one specialist in circular economy, one citizen representative. The jury will meet between 12 and 23 September 2022. Project applicants will be contacted within 10 working days of the jury meeting.
