Das Projekt 2024 jährt sich zum 200sten Mal der Todestag von Ferdinand Franz Wallraf: Das Festival WASTA verbindet die facettenreiche Persönlichkeit des Kölner Gelehrten mit internationaler Street Art. Gemeinsam mit ihren Student*innen organisiert das Kunsthistorische Institut mit der Universitäts- und Stadtbibliothek der Universität zu Köln ein partizipatives Kulturevent. Gefördert wird das Festival von der Sparkasse KölnBonn. Wir bieten einen Raum für verschiedene Veranstaltungen, die Wissen zu Wallraf und zur Street Art vermitteln. Die Straßen Kölns sollen zum Ausstellungsort werden.

Vom 5.–15.9.2024 präsentieren bis zu zehn Künstler*innen ihre Projekte zu Wallraf im gesamten Stadtraum.

Kostenlose Events wie Talks, Workshops und Führungen geben den Kölner*innen die Möglichkeit nicht nur Wallraf, sondern auch viele Künstler*innen kennenzulernen. Das Thema Wallraf war Sammler, Netzwerker und Hüter von Kultur und Wissen: Inwiefern ist eine Person, die vor 200 Jahren gelebt hat, für uns heute wichtig? Und wie kann dieser eine zeitgenössische, künstlerische Form gegeben werden? WASTA will nicht nur Ferdinand Franz Wallraf feiern, sondern auch zeigen, warum es sich lohnt, an bestimmte Menschen zu erinnern. Wallraf selbst ließ zu besonderen Ereignissen monumentale, ephemere Inschriften in Köln modellieren. WASTA nimmt dies als Inspiration, um Kunst und Schrift in die Stadtlandschaft zu bringen.

Die Publikation
Nach der Festivalwoche wird ein Begleitband beim Verlag Walther König veröffentlicht. Hierfür wird die renommierte US-Street Art Fotografin Martha Cooper die Kunstwerke dokumentieren. 

Sende uns dein Portfolio mit Artist-Statement, Arbeitsproben und ggf. ein skizzenhaftes Konzept (max. eine Seite zu WASTA) bis zum 7.4.2024 zu (ein PDF max. ca. 5MB). Dein Werk könnte ab September 2024 sichtbar im Kölner Stadtraum ausgestellt werden und Eingang in die begleitende Projektpublikation finden.

Der Wettbewerb
Die Bewerbungsphase ist zweiphasig. In der ersten Runde genügt uns dein Portfolio. Die erste Jurysitzung findet am 15.4.2024 statt, in dieser wird das WASTA-Team anhand der Künstler*innenprofile entscheiden, wer zur zweiten Wettbewerbsphase zugelassen wird. In der zweiten Runde werden die ausgewählten Bewerber*innen dazu eingeladen, ihre konkreteren Ideen für WASTA vor der Jury vorzustellen.

Für die zur Realisation ausgesuchten Arbeiten steht ein Betrag von jeweils 5.000,00 € brutto als Pauschale (beinhaltend Honorar, Reise- und Realisierungskosten) zur Verfügung. Zusätzlich werden drei Preise von der Sparkasse KölnBonn mit je 3.000,00 € ausgelobt. Alle zur zweiten Runde eingeladenen Projekte sollen Eingang in die Publikation finden. Es gibt keine personenbezogenen Kriterien für die Auswahl der Beiträge. Einzig das Artist-Statement und die Arbeitsproben entscheiden über eine Einladung und Realisierung der Projekte.

Das Team WASTA ist ein Projekt des Kunsthistorischen Instituts und der Universitäts- und Stadtbibliothek Köln, welches im Rahmen des Wallraf-Jahres der Stadt Köln und der Universität zu Köln organisiert wird.

The Project 2024 marks the 200th anniversary of the death of Ferdinand Franz Wallraf: The WASTA festival combines the multifaceted personality of the Cologne scholar with international street art. The festival, sponsored by Sparkasse KölnBonn, is a cultural event organized by the Institute of Art History and the University and City Library of the University of Cologne with the participation of a group of students. We offer a space for various events that aim to convey knowledge about Wallraf and about street art. From September 5 to 15, 2024, the streets of Cologne will become an exhibition venue where up to ten artists will present their projects on Wallraf throughout the city. Free events such as talks, workshops and guided tours will give the people of Cologne the opportunity to get to know not only Wallraf, but also many acclaimed artists. The Theme Wallraf was a collector, a networker and a guardian of culture and knowledge: To what extent is a person who lived 200 years ago important to us today? And how can this be given a contemporary artistic form? WASTA not only wants to celebrate Ferdinand Franz Wallraf, but also to show why certain people are worth remembering. Wallraf himself created monumental, ephemeral inscriptions for special events in Cologne. WASTA takes this as an inspiration to bring art and inscriptions into the urban landscape, giving new meaning to images and words from the past. The Publication During the festival, renowned US street art photographer Martha Cooper will document the artworks and events. A book on the project, featuring her photographs, will be published shortly thereafter by Walther König Verlag. 

Send us your portfolio with artist statement, work samples and, if applicable, a concept sketch (max. one page on WASTA) by April 7, 2024 (one PDF max. 5MB). Your work could be exhibited in Cologne’s urban space from September 2024 and be included in the project publication. Further information For more details about Wallraf: www.wasta-projekt.de Students of the Institute of Art History have compiled contributions that scientifically examine the Wallraf and his historical context and serve as a basis for your artistic realization. The competition The competition has two phases. In the first round, your portfolio is enough. The first jury meeting will take place on April 15, 2024, at which the WASTA team will decide who will be admitted to the second phase of the competition based on the artist profiles. In the second round, the selected applicants will be invited to present their more concrete ideas for WASTA to the jury. All works selected for realization are each entitled to a gross amount of € 5,000.00 as a lump sum (including fees, travel and realization costs). In addition, three prizes of € 3,000.00 each will be awarded by Sparkasse KölnBonn. All projects invited to the second round will be included in the project publication. There are no personal criteria for the selection of entries. Only the artist statement and the work samples decide whether the projects are invited and realized.
