Insectopolis – Projektstipendium für künstlerische Intervention im öffentlichen Raum zu Insekten in der Stadt

Das ISOE – Institut für sozial-ökologische Forschung vergibt ein Projektstipendium für die Entwicklung und Umsetzung einer künstlerischen Arbeit für den öffentlichen Raum in Frankfurt am Main. Das Stipendium ist eingebunden in das Forschungsprojekt „SLInBio – Städtische Lebensstile und die Inwertsetzung von Biodiversität“.

Der weltweite Rückgang der Insektenvielfalt ist symptomatisch für die tiefgreifenden planetaren Veränderungen infolge menschlichen Handelns, die zum definierenden Faktor des gegenwärtigen geologischen Erdzeitalters des „Anthropozän“ geworden sind. In der Diagnose des Anthropozän steckt zugleich die Hoffnung, dass die menschgemachten Krisen auch von Menschen zu gestalten und zu bewältigen sind. Um das Insektensterben aufzuhalten, müssen die Beziehungen zwischen Menschen und Insekten neu ausgerichtet werden. Ein grundlegender sozial-ökologischer Wandel ist erforderlich. Gerade in Städten fehlen allerdings Orte und Gelegenheiten für ein positives Erleben und eine Auseinandersetzung mit der Insektenvielfalt. Im urbanen Umfeld werden Insekten bekämpft und vernichtet. Sie bleiben in ihrer Vielfalt unsichtbar. Vor diesem Hintergrund gewinnt das Zusammenwirken von wissenschaftlicher Arbeit und künstlerisch-ästhetischen Perspektiven für die Gestaltung neuer Erzählungen über die urbane Ko-Existenz von Menschen und Insekten an Bedeutung.

Die künstlerische Herangehensweise birgt die Möglichkeit poetischer und sensibler Interpretationen der Natur und Entwürfe für neue Beziehungsgefüge im Anthropozän. Im Dialog mit der wissenschaftlichen Forschung hinterfragt die künstlerische Forschung etablierte Begriffe, Standpunkte und Gewohnheiten. „Thinking ecologically means attuning, perceiving, and doing what we know how to do differently, in different spaces, dimensions, relationships. Projektstipendium und transdisziplinäres Begleitprogramm
Das ISOE lädt im Rhein-Main-Gebiet ansässige Künstler*innen aller Disziplinen ein, Projektskizzen für eine künstlerische Arbeit im öffentlichen Raum im Stadtgebiet von Frankfurt am Main einzureichen. Grundsätzlich sind alle Formate und Medien vorstellbar, die für einen Zeitraum von mindestens zwei Wochen ausgestellt und der Öffentlichkeit zugänglich gemacht werden können. Thematischer Fokus für die Projektarbeit, die als künstlerische Intervention in den öffentlichen Diskurs der Stadt hineinwirken soll, sind Beziehungen und die ineinander verschränkten Lebensräume und -bedingungen von Menschen und Insekten in der Stadt. Die Projektvorschläge sollen sich an der Schnittstelle von sozial-ökologischen und ästhetischen Fragestellungen bewegen und offen sein für eine wechselseitige Integration zwischen den Künsten und der Wissenschaft.

Das Projektstipendium beinhaltet ein transdisziplinäres Begleitprogramm, das die Konzeption in Zusammenarbeit mit den Forschenden des Projektverbunds SLInBio in den beteiligten Partnerorganisationen wie dem Palmengarten der Stadt Frankfurt am Main oder dem Senckenberg Naturmuseum ermöglicht. Das transdisziplinäre Begleitprogramm wird zwischen April und Juni 2024 durchgeführt. Die Ausstellung der Arbeit ist für einen Zeitraum von mindestens zwei Wochen ab Anfang Juli an einem öffentlichen Ort in der Stadt Frankfurt am Main vorgesehen. Das Projektstipendium wird durch ein Honorar für die Konzeptualisierung und Recherche in Kooperation mit den Forschenden sowie für Umsetzung und Ausstellungsrecht mit einem Gesamtbetrag in Höhe von € 5.000 zzgl. MwSt. vergütet.

Zusätzlich wird für die Realisierung der Projektarbeit im öffentlichen Raum ein Sachkostenbudget in Höhe von € 4.500 zur Verfügung gestellt. Bewerbungsschluss ist der 31. Januar 2024.

The global decline in insect diversity is symptomatic of the profound planetary changes resulting from human activity, which have become the defining factor of the current geological era of the “Anthropocene”. But the definition of the Anthropocene also comprises the hope that man-made crises can in turn be shaped and overcome by humans. In order to stop the extinction of insects, the relationship between humans and insects must be realigned. Therefore, a fundamental social-ecological change is necessary. In cities in particular, however, there is a lack of places and opportunities for positive experiences and encounters with insect diversity. In urban environments, insects are usually excluded and exterminated. Their diversity remains invisible. Project grant and transdisciplinary accompanying program
ISOE invites artists from all disciplines based in the Rhine-Main region to submit project outlines for an artistic work to be displayed in public space in the city of Frankfurt am Main. Eligible are all formats and media that are suitable for public exhibition for a period of at least two weeks. The thematic focus for the artistic work is on relationships and the entangled habitats and living conditions of humans and insects in the city. The work should be intended as an artistic intervention into the city’s public discourse. The project proposals should operate at the interface of social-ecological and aesthetic issues and be open to a mutual integration between the arts and the sciences. The project grant includes the participation in a transdisciplinary setting. It offers the possibility to cooperate with researchers of the SLInBio network and the participating institutions such as Palmengarten Frankfurt or Senckenberg Natural History Museum.

The transdisciplinary research cooperation will take place between April and June 2024. The exhibition of the artistic work at a public location in the city of Frankfurt am Main will take place in July. The grant recipient will be remunerated with a total amount of 5,000 Euro plus VAT. This compensates for conceptualization and research in cooperation with the researchers as well as for implementation and exhibition rights. In addition, a budget of 4,500 Euro for material expenses is provided for the realization of the project work in public spaces. Application deadline is January 31, 2024.
